The Goodwood Festival of Speed is a celebration of all things fast, so it is fitting that Mercedes-Benz chose this event to debut its new AMG GT R sports coupe.

Don't mistake the AMG GT R is for a tuned-up version of the AMG GT. It's been thoroughly reworked and Mercedes-Benz even calls it its most hardcore and track-focused GT sports car yet.

To begin, the AMG GT R is both faster and lighter than the regular AMG GT. Power in the AMG GT R is up from "just" 456hp and 600nm in the regular AMG GT to an impressive 577hp and a ridiculous 700nm of torque.

Power still comes up from a 4-liter twin-turbo V8, but the AMG GT R features turbos with lower inertia, which means they spool faster and that the AMG GT R is more responsive. The AMG GT R also has a new lightweight titanium exhaust system that lets the engine breathe better.

And thanks to the extensive use of lighter carbon fiber bits (the entire roof is carbon fiber), the new AMG GT R is nearly 100kg lighter than the standard AMG GT.

As a result, this very green and very angry-looking car dispatches the century sprint in just 3.6 seconds - 0.4 seconds quicker than the standard AMG GT. Top speed is 318km/h.

To keep the AMG GT R planted, the car gets wider tracks, lots of carbon fiber aero, and a manually adjustable, forged aluminum suspension.

And to help it stop, the AMG GT R gets massive composite brakes as standard, 390mm up front and 360mm in the rear. However, most customers will likely opt for the optional ceramic brakes, which are more resistant to fading and are slightly larger up front at a whopping 402mm.

Mercedes-Benz will start delivering the AMG GT R early next year around March.

Oh, and in case you were wondering about that green paint, it's called "AMG green hell magno" (we are not making this up), and it's name in homage to the Nürburgring test track where the AMG GT R was developed. The Nürburgring track is nicknamed "The Green Hell" for its numerous unforgiving twists and turns.
