Meet your new Personal Robot

If movies have shown us anything, it's that it is awesome to have your very own robot buddy/ servant/ minion. Luke Skywalker has Artoo, Hiro has Baymax and even Iron Man has J.A.R.V.I.S. (although that's more of an A.I. than a full fledged robot). If you want to join their ranks, you're going to need your own robotic compadre to help you out. Here's where we introduce you to the whole point of this article, the Personal Robot.

The Personal Robot from Robotbase has pretty much every feature you'd want in a robot (except arms, it doesn't have them). It has facial and voice recognition and can even move around on its own due to it being able to map its surroundings. If you have smart devices in your home, it can connect with them and provide you with updates on their status. In fact, one of numerous touted features has it functioning as a security guard, with it patrolling your house when you're asleep (or outside) and then relaying what it sees to your smart device. You can view a demo video about the robot, as well as the features it has at the Kickstarter page.

Playing devil's advocate, we're a bit skeptical that the product will perform as well as it does in the video, especially the voice reply part. It seems to be a bit too staged. Bigger, multi-billion dollar companies have been trying to come up with something similar but they're all beaten to the punch by an unknown upstart? Of course, it might be legit. After all, people had suspicions about the Oculus Rift too when it first debuted on Kickstarter and look at how that turned out? Still, until we've the final version demonstrated in front of our very eyes, color us intrigued and cautiously optimistic but skeptical it'll work out of the box as intended.

If you're game enough to buy into the promises made by Robotbase, you can pledge to the Kickstarter campaign. As of right now, US$1200 (plus US$200 for shipping), nets you your very own Personal Robot. That's only for a limited number of backers though, as the price will increase as tiers are gradually sold out. Since the Kickstarter target's already been reached, pledging is guaranteed to get you a robot by year's end (if all goes to the creator's plan). Is it a working robot though? That's anybody's guess.
