Misfit today announced the Shine 2, the latest iteration of its Shine fitness and sleep monitor. The new fitness band retains a similar aesthetic to the first Shine and is also made out of anodized aluminium, but it now comes with more powerful hardware and is slimmer than before.

Misfit has taken its time in releasing a successor to the Shine, which first debuted in late 2013. Along the way, we also saw the Shine Flash, a cheaper, plastic version of the Shine.

But a real upgrade is here at last, and the Shine 2 comes with a new three-axis magnetometer that joins the existing three-axis accelerometer to provide more accurate activity and sleep tracking.

Furthermore, the ring of white LEDs on the Shine has been replaced with a halo of 12 rainbow-colored lights on the band’s face, which are capable of displaying up to 16 million colors. This means that users can now view their progress or check the time more easily. In addition, users can now receive text and call notifications and wake-up alarms on the Shine 2, courtesy of the new built-in vibration motor.

According to Misfit, overall performance is also faster now. It says that touch response is much improved thanks to the new capacitive sensing technology, and sync speed and Bluetooth range has been boosted.

The Shine 2 works in conjunction with the Misfit Link app, which enables users to tap to play music, control their smart home devices, or even take a selfie with their smartphone.

However, the Shine 2 is still rather an evolutionary rather than revolutionary upgrade. Many key features of the original make an appearance here, like the modular design and six-month battery life that effectively eliminates the need to charge.

Starting 1 November, the Shine 2 will be available for US$99.99 in Rose Gold or Carbon Black.
