Lytro Introduces 3D Pictures for Desktop, Mobile & TVs

Lytro, maker of the Lytro Light Field camera which lets you take photos and re-adjust the focus afterwards, have announced Lytro 3D, a collection of features which allow users to view their photos in 3D.

By updating to Lytro Desktop 3.1 for Mac and Windows, and Lytro Mobile 1.2 for iOS, pictures can now be viewed in 3D, including pictures previously taken. The pictures can also be viewed in 3D by connecting to a 3D-capable TV over HDMI or Apple AirPlay.

The Lytro Light Field camera doesn't capture light the same way a conventional camera does. Instead, it captures the 'light field', information which contains the direction of light. This allows the camera and its accompanying apps to change the point of focus after an image has already been captured. You can play with the image below to see what we mean (you'll need Adobe Flash to interact with the image). Light field cameras aren't new, but Lytro was the first to miniaturize and commercialize the technology.

Even though the Lytro camera has been out for more than a year now, Lytro continues to update the cameras with new features. They previously introduced manual controls as a firmware update, and later added two new creative tools, Perspective Shift and Living Filters, as a free update to the Lytro Desktop app.
