Lomography Wants to Revive the 170-year old Petzval Lens for Canon & Nikon Cameras

Lomography wants to revive a lens from the 19th century for use on modern-day Nikon and Canon DSLR cameras. They're raising funds now on Kickstarter to build their version of the Petzval lens, a lens with unique characteristics which Lomography describes as "sharpness and crispness, strong color saturation, wonderful swirly bokeh effect, artful vignettes and narrow depth of field". You can see for yourself how the lens performs with the sample images below taken from Lomography's Petzval mini-site.

Originally invented by Joseph Petzval in Vienna in 1840, Lomography's Kickstarter project is reinventing the lens for use with Canon EF and Nikon F mount cameras, so you can use the lens with both 35mm analog and DSLR cameras. Lomography expects delivery of the lenses on February 2014, but "are confident to have the first 1000 lenses shipped out by December 2013".

The retail price of the lens is planned to be US$499 on launch, but Kickstarter backers can get it for a lower price (at the time of this writing, the US$300-$350 tiers for getting the lens have been sold out, the lowest amount currently available to get the lens is at US$400).
