Linksys announces new WRT1200AC dual-band AC1200 router

The Linksys WRT1200AC router sports a distinctive design reminiscent of the legendary WRT54G router from 11 years ago.

It has taken some time, but Linksys’ new dual-band WRT1200AC router has arrived on our shores. If this router looks familiar with you, it’s because it is based heavily on the older WRT1900AC router.

Like the WRT1900AC router, the new WRT1200AC router pays homage to Linksys’ legendary WRT54G router, which has sold over 50 million units since it was launched some 11 years ago. Even more staggering is the fact that some users say that their WRT54G routers are still functional. As a result, the WRT name has become synonymous with performance, quality and reliability.

The new WRT1200AC router builds on the WRT heritage and is positioned by Linksys as a premium AC1200 class router. It features a dual-core 1.3GHz processor and is paired with a generous 512MB of RAM and 128MB of flash. This means it actually has double the amount of RAM as compared to the WRT1900AC.

Since its a dual-band AC1200 class router, the WRT1200AC supports up to two spatial streams on both its 2.4GHz and 5GHz bands. This means a maximum data transfer rate of 400Mbps and 867Mbps on its 2.4GHz and 5GHz bands respectively.

As a member of Linksys’ WRT lineup, the WRT1200AC router supports OpenWRT firmware so tech savvy users can download custom firmware from the OpenWRT community for added functionality.

Paired with Singtel's 1Gbps Unlimited Fibre plan, the WRT1200AC achieved these impressive numbers. Just to be clear, the client was connected to the router via Ethernet.

The WRT1200AC router also features Linksys’ Smart Wi-Fi software and user interface, so it is equipped with niceties such as remote network management, networking mapping and real-time traffic monitoring. The Smart Wi-Fi user interface has also recently been updated with various interface tweaks and now also features OpenVPN server support, allowing advanced users greater control over how they want to manage their network.

The Linksys WRT1200AC router will go on sale on 4 June at all Challenger outlets islandwide and at other leading consumer electronic retail store by end June. It is priced at S$329. New subscribers and re-contracting customers of Singtel’s 1Gbps Unlimited Fiber plan will get a $100 discount.
