LG will reportedly switch to OLED displays for its phones from Q3 2017

The LG G6 comes with a 5.7-inch IPS LCD display.

Just two months ago, LG Display CEO Han Sang-beom believed that there will still be demand for LCD panels in the near future. However, things seem to have changed as industry sources claim that LG is finally jumping on the OLED bandwagon for its smartphones.

Beginning from the third quarter of this year, LG will start rolling out smartphones with OLED displays. The first phone is reportedly the V30 while the G7 flagship smartphone will follow suit in 2018.

“Most OLED screens produced at LG Display's Gumi E5 plant in the second half will be used for its sister firm LG Electronics’ smartphones starting with the V30,” a source briefed on the matter told The Investor on condition of anonymity.

This isn't the first time that LG is using an OLED display for its smartphones. The G Flex, introduced in 2013, has a 6-inch P-OLED display. Its successor, the G Flex 2, also uses a P-OLED display.

With the new plan to go all-out for OLED in its smartphones, LG's OLED production is expected to begin in July. However, LG is said to be facing a tight supply due to low yield of OLED panels.

“It may take some time for LG Display to reach the similar yield rate of its rival Samsung Display. There are a range of issues to solve such as patents and supply chains for OLED equipment and materials,” said a display analyst who wished to be unnamed.
