LG to Unveil Smartphone with Flexible OLED Screen in Q4 2013
LG is no stranger in the display industry. It is the first company to introduce a curved 3D OLED TV at CES 2013 earlier this year, and it wants to hit another milestone by shipping a smartphone with a flexible display by the end of the year.
According to The Wall Street Journal, LG shared this plan while discussing the company's recent financial results. Yoon Bu-hyun, the company's vice president of mobile said that the mobile division is working closely with LG Display to bring such a phone to consumers. While it is unlikely that consumers will see a flexible smartphone, LG is expected to unveil a device with a wraparound display.
Flexible displays have been touted by several players for many years. Samsung also took the wraps off its new line of flexible OLED displays at CES 2013. Dubbed "YOUM", the displays use ultra-thin plastic so as to be bendable and virtually unbreakable. However, existing technological and manufacturing difficulties may affect the production yields for the next generation displays which in turn delay its promised launch in Q4.
