Over the weekend, LG announced that the U.S. National Information Assurance Partnership (NIAP) certified the LG G5 and LG V10 smartphones for meeting international security standards in corporate environments.

The NIAP certification came about from LG’s GATE technology, which is now on the LG G5 and LG V10 smartphones. GATE (which stands for Guarded Access to Enterprise) is a security platform developed by LG in 2013. According to its makers, it provides a variety of security solutions and a mobile device management system at an enterprise level. GATE was designed to maintain the integrity of software components, strengthen system protection, and safeguard corporate data without any compromise to the phone’s performance.

The LG G5 and V10 are also equipped with Google’s Android for Work, and it benefits from the LG GATE network capabilities. For instance, Android for Work has a container solution that separates secure work apps from personal apps.

Enterprise or military-tier security on Android OS phones have always been a point of interest to its respective phone makers. LG GATE technology is LG’s take on mobile security for enterprise use, and it shares the same ideals with the Samsung Knox platform that came to Singapore in 2014.

NIAP evaluates security conformance to an internationally-recognized standard, also known as the Common Criteria Evaluation and Validation Scheme (CCEVS). NIAP certification is recognized by the governments of 25 Common Criteria member countries, which includes South Korea, India, and Japan. Singapore is not a member, and therefore does not necessarily recognize NIAP certification.
