LG Electronics to exit plasma TV market by end November
Plasma TVs are well and truly dead. We know that Panasonic has stopped making plasma TVs since the end of last year; we also know that Samsung SDI will end plasma panel production by the end of next month. Even LG Electronics has hinted before that it too would be terminating its plasma TV business soon. Well, we now have a date from LG, and it’s November 30. That’s right, that’s just a month away.
Unsurprisingly, LG cites “decreasing demand” as the key reason for this decision. Indeed, according to research firm DisplaySearch, plasma TV shipments will fall from 5.2 million this year to just 500,000 next year. In other words, it’s only a matter of time China-based Changhong, which is now the sole maker of plasma TVs, will abandon plasma as well.
Moving forward, LG will be focusing on its OLED and LCD TVs. If you’ve bought a recent LG plasma TV, the company will continue to provide after-sales support.
