LG unveiled the V30 smartphone at IFA 2017.

In line with current trends, the V30 sports one of the best smartphone screen-to-body ratios. The 6-inch 18:9 Quad HD+ OLED FullVision display has minimal bezels and curves slightly to the sides. As a result, the V30 has a smaller footprint than its predecessor. In fact, LG claims that the V30 is the lightest among smartphones in the 6-inch and over category.

The Second Screen, which was introduced in previous V series smartphones, is replaced by a new Always-on Display and Floating Bar. When the display is off, there are shortcuts to access Quick Tools and Music Player. The semi-transparent Floating Bar can hold up to five apps and be dragged off to the side when not in use.

The V30 has a metal frame sandwiched by Corning Gorilla Glass 5 on the front and back. Its chassis is stated to have met U.S Department of Defense requirements for durability. Within the chassis are a heat pipe and cooling pad to minimize heat build up, so you do not have to worry about the 3,300mAh battery overheating during fast charging (Quick Charge 3.0) or wireless charging. In addition, the chassis is rated IP68 for water and dust resistance.

On the back are an upgraded dual-camera module and a fingerprint sensor which doubles as the power button. As mentioned in a previous news release, the V30 is the first smartphone to sport a f/1.6 aperture camera lens. The 16MP sensor is found on the main camera and when paired with the glass Crystal Clear Lens, the V30 can capture more light, more accurate colors and sharper photos than its rivals with plastic lens. It is also supported by OIS, EIS and Hybrid Autofocus for clean and sharp photos. The secondary camera is an upgraded 13MP wide-angle lens with two-thirds less distortion than the V20. The front-facing 5MP camera supports Face Recognition to unlock the phone without having to press any button.

The imaging software is also improved with the new Cine Video mode which has Cine Effect and Point Zoom features. Cine Effect has a palette of 15 presets to give videos a unique movie-like feel ranging from romantic comedy, summer blockbuster, mystery, thriller to classic movies. Point Zoom allows you to zoom in on any subject smoothly using the on-screen zoom slider regardless of its position in the frame. Other photo and video-centric features include LG-Cine log for preserving a wide dynamic range and color gamut, and Graphy for selecting the same presets (e.g. white balance, shutter speed, aperture and ISO) used in professional photos from the Graphy website.

Audiophiles will love the Hi-Fi Quad DAC with audio tuning by B&O Play. The V30 is the first global phone to support MQA (Master Quality Authenticated) technology for streaming of high resolution audio. Other specs include a Qualcomm Snapdragon 835 mobile platform, 4GB RAM, 64GB internal storage space with microSD support up to 2TB, Android 7.1.2 Nougat, Bluetooth 5.0 BLE, NFC and USB Type-C 2.0 (3.1 compatible).

LG states that the V30 will be available in South Korea from 21 September followed by key markets in North America, Asia, Europe, Africa and the Middle East. The V30 comes in four hues: aurora black, cloud silver, moroccan blue and lavender violet.  There is another model, the V30+ with 128GB internal storage space which will be available in select markets. Pricing and local availability are not known at the time of publication.
