A levitating light that'll never burn out, the Lunaluxx

The Lunaluxx lamp will come in other colors, though you'll need to pay a bit extra if you want it in something other than Black or White.

Levitation has always been something that's a visual treat to watch. That's one of the reasons that people want hoverboards so much. Well, the Lunarluxx isn't a hoverboard (unless you can shrink down like Ant-Man) but parts of it does hover. It's also really cool to look at. Don't believe us? Take a look at the video.

The Lunarluxx is a lamp without a bulb. Instead it uses a disc, which is levitated via magnets, which emits light. The magnets make the disc levitate through a process called magnetic suspension.

The magnetic technology requires just a bit of power to run so it won't cause your electric bill to rise.

As for the disc that emits the light, it has phosphor in it. An invisible blue LED at the base of the lamp shoots blue light at it, which the phosphor in the disc interacts with, re-emitting it as clear white light.

It might sound a bit technical, but the bottom line is that the Lunaluxx does work as advertised.

One of the great selling points of the Lunarluxx (other than it looks cool) is that you will never have to buy a replacement bulb for the Lunaluxx. The phosphor discs that it uses will never degrade or break. Supposedly, the bulb's brightness will never dim and remain as bright on day four hundred as it was on day one. The Lunaluxx also claims to use less power than a conventional lamp. The LED light uses only about 2-3 watts, and the levitation magnets use about 4 watts. The light that emits from the disc is equivalent to the light that a 15 - 20 watt bulb produces.

If you're interested, the base price of a basic black or white Lunaluxx is 120 euros. That price rises to 150 euros if you want a color other than the two basic ones, with a shipping rate of 26 euros. The total cost is 146 euros (around $212)  for a black or white Lunarluxx or 176 euros (around $255). The Lunarluxx is definitely not a cheap lamp by any standards, but you do get a cool conversation piece on top of a lamp.

Like any Kickstarter product, there's a chance the Lunaluxx won't make its target goal. Currently it only has about 25,000 euros pledged, a far cry from the required 65,000 euros the project is seeking. Still, seeing as how there's 34 more days to go, there's still a good chance that the Lunaluxx will get funded.
