Lenstag Helps Prevent Camera Theft

Lenstag wants to help you keep track of your extravagant photography gear for not only theft recovery, but prevention as well. The new, free-to-use website that presently has users from more than 80 countries, isn't just any average possession database.

Here's why: first, photographers sign up with a simple email and password combination. Then, start adding gear by entering the make and model, and you will be prompted with suggestions to buff up your entry. You'll also need to enter in your serial code, which the site requires photographic evidence of for authentication. Finally, an actual person does the final verification.

You can transfer ownership to other Lenstag members, or report stolen gear, so people can look it up should they find stolen gear, including police departments and private buyers shopping on Craigslist, for example. If someone is searching for a particular mode of lens or camera with your serial number, they'll get a notice that it's stolen and can fill in a form to submit a report.

Additionally, the site has rolled out a feature which allows you to make a temporary verification link for their online sales of used camera goods, so the listing won't be around once the gear is being sold.
