Lenovo's Y series introduces new gaming machines and gear

Lenovo's Y series introduces new gaming machines with Skylake

 Lenovo's latest line-up includes the Ideapad Y700, the Ideacentre Y700 and Y900 and a range of gaming accessories.

As you might have noticed, Intel's new 6th Gen CPUs codenamed 'Skylake' are here. That means that hardware manufacturers the world over are scrambling to announce new machines that have the new CPUs inside. Lenovo's one of them, and surprisingly, this time they're going after the gaming market too, with their latest Y series line of desktop and notebook machines.

 

Lenovo ideacentre Y700 / Y900

The ideacentre machines are all desktop gaming rigs that offer decent performance.

Lenovo's unleashing two different models of the ideacentre desktop; the Y700 and the Y900. Both machines will sport the same sleek looking chassis but their hardware will differ.

The Y700 will come with an Intel 6th Gen Quad-Core Skylake i7 processor (up to 65 watts), a NVIDIA GeForce GTX 970 (4GB VRAM), up to 32GB DDR4 RAM and storage options that include having a 2TB SSHD and a 256GB SSD.

It'll also have a DVD/BD RAM drive, and 7.1 Surround Sound powered by Dolby Home Theater.Wi-Fi 802,11 a.c and Bluetooth 2 x2 (M.2) is also supported. Its PSU will support up to 450 watts.

The machine will sport 2 USB 2.0 and 4 USB 3.0 ports, an Ethernet port, HDMI, VGA and DVI output, as well as 6 audio jacks with SPDIF and PS/2 combo port. All this will be located in the rear of the machine. For the front, the machine will pack a 7-in-1 card reader, 4 USB 2.0 and 3.0 ports as well as audio jacks.

The Y900 will also come with an Intel 6th Gen Quad-Core Skylake i7 K processor (up to 95 watts), a NVIDIA GeForce GTX 980 (4GB VRAM) and up to 64GB DDR4 RAM. The machine will have either a 2TB SSHD, a 256GB SSD or 256 GB SSD (M.2 PCIe) storage. Like the Y700, it'll also have a DVD/BD RAM drive and 7.1 Surround Sound done by Dolby Home Theater. The Y700's PSU will support up to 625 watts.

Connectivity options are also similar to the Y700 with Wi-Fi 802.11 a/c and Bluetooth 2 x 2 (M.2) capabilties. The ports, placement and quantity of them also remain the same as the Y700.

Both machines come with Windows 10.

 

ideapad Y700

 The ideapad Y700 comes in a variety of configuration, There's even an AMD version of the machine that uses AMD processors and graphics cards.

Unlike the ideacentre machines, the ideapad Y700 comes in a variety of configurations. The base configuration is the 15.6-inch version, which comes with an Intel Quad-Core i7 processor, an NVIDIA GeForce GTX 960M (4GB VRAM) and up to 16GB of DDR4 RAM. It'll either have a 1 TB HDD, a 512GB SSD or a 1 TB SSHD for storage.  Audio duties will be handled by two 2W JBL speakers and a 3W subwoofer with Dolby Home Theater. Finally, the machine will have a 60Wh battery.

Connectivity options include Gigabit LAN, Wi-Fi 2 x 2 a/c and Bluetooth 4.0. The Y700 won't support USB 3.1, though it'll have USB 3.0, USB 2.0, HDMI and a card reader built-in.

The 15.6-inch version of the ideapad Y700 (Y700-15ISK) will have two display options; a Full HD display or a 4K IPS display.

There's also a 17.3-inch version of the Y700 (Y700-17ISK), with the same specifications as the 15.6-inch version, though the bigger version of the Y700 only comes with a Full HD display.

Other alternate specifications have Intel's RealSense 3D camera's installed (Y700-17ISK with RealSense) or a 4K touchscreen display ((Y700-17ISK Touch). These versions share the 15.6-inch hardware options, along with their specific extra hardware.

AMD fans aren't left out in the cold either, as there's a version of the ideapad Y700 (Y700-15ACZ) that comes with an AMD Carrizo A10 processor and AMD R9 (4GB VRAM) graphics card. This version of the Y700 comes with up to 1TB HDD + 512 SSD storage. Other than the AMD processor and graphics card, the rest of the hardware remains the same as the other 15.6-inch versions of the Y700, though the Y700-15ACZ doesn't have an optional 4K display.

All versions of the ideapad Y700 will come with Windows 10.

On top of the gaming machines, Lenovo's also unveiled new accessories that are especially made for gamers.

Lenovo Y Gaming Surround Sound Headset

The headset is powered by USB 3.0 when used on a PC, though it can also be used on mobile devices with its 3.5mm jack.

Lenovo knows that gamers are going to need gear to complement their hardware which is why it's also releasing the Y Gaming Surround Sound Headset. Powered by USB 3.0, the 7.1 virtual surround sound headset is lightweight and durable, with swivel ear cups, noise cancellation capabilities and a removable noise cancelling microphone. There's also a control box attached to it that lets you mute and adjust your volume quickly.

The headset will also come with custom software that allows you to customize the sound quality, as well as offer voice masking, which allows you change the sound of your voice.

The headset also has a 3.5 mm audio jack, which means it can be used with mobile devices as well.

The headset will be compatible with machines running Windows 7 onwards.

 

Lenovo Y Gaming Precision Mouse

The 8200dpi mouse is weighted and follows the black and red color scheme of all the other Y series products.

Lenovo also introduced the Y Gaming Precision Mouse. The USB 2.0, 8200dpi mouse features a 1000Hz polling rate, adjustable DPI settings, 8 programmable buttons. Its weight is also adjustable with four removable weight cartridges.

Like the headset, the mouse can only be used on Windows 7 onwards.

Lenovo's not released the pricing for any of the products we've shown. If you're interested in any of them, the only to do is just to sit and wait for more details.
