Leica joins the ranks of Sony and Samsung in the smartphone photography industry. The German camera company and Chinese telecommunications giant Huawei jointly announced their partnership earlier today. They claimed that the new co-operation will see a “reinvention of smartphone photography”, with no further details specified. Here’s the excerpt from their announcement:

Today Huawei Consumer Business Group (BG) and Leica Camera AG are delighted to announce the start of a strategic partnership, a co-operation with shared premium ambitions and spirit, which will see both technology and photography brands combining their shared ethos in a long-term commitment to the art of craftsmanship, meticulous engineering and the spirit of winning collaboration, to create a powerhouse in the reinvention of smartphone photography.

While there’s no word on the types or number of consumer devices we’ll see from this collaboration, Leica and Huawei will be co-operating in areas surrounding “research and development, design, co-engineering, user experience, marketing and retail distribution”.

The Huawei-Leica partnership could mean much more than sticking a branded camera module on the back of Huawei smartphones. Oliver Kaltner, CEO of Leica Camera AG said: “The technology partnership with Huawei offers Leica Camera an excellent opportunity to introduce its proven optical expertise into a new product segment and to unlock exciting business areas in the field of mobile devices”. VR is certainly one of the newer businesses on the block which Huawei and Leica have yet to explore, and it is a new dimension to smartphone photography given how LG and Samsung are seen delving into consumer VR photography at MWC 2016.

More details on Huawei and Leica's partnership will be revealed at a later date.
