Leica Enters the Mirrorless Camera Fray with the Leica T-System.

Camera fans beware: there’s a new luxury camera to lust for. Leica has just announced their new Leica-T mirrorless camera system, a new range camera that features a minimalist design (in collaboration with Audi) and a whole new range of lenses.

The new Leica T-series camera.

The Leica T has a 23.6 x15.7 mm 16.5MP APS-C sensor and shoots to both JPEG and DNG formats, while Full HD video recording is supported with 1920 x 1080 p (30 fps) and 1280 x 720 p (30 fps) available. Calling it a camera “reduced to its essentials”, the Leica-T features a 3.7” TFT LCD touchscreen on the rear, internal storage of 16GB with support for SD/SDHC/SDXC cards, and a minimum of control dials on the camera. In fact, the body itself is an aluminium unibody produced in Germany using a new manufacturing process, which only serves to enhance the premium feel.

The Leica T features a 3.7" TFT LCD touchscreen.

While only the Leica Vario-Elmar-T 18–56 mm f/3.5–5.6 ASPH, and the Lecia Summicron T 23mm f/2 ASPH (an equivalent of 35mm in full-frame format) will be available at launch, a new series of autofocus lenses for the Leica T-mount has been planned for launch over the next few years. With the Super-Vario-Elmar-T 11–23 mm f/3.5–4.5 ASPH wide-angle zoom and the Vario-Elmar-T 55–135 mm f/3.5–4.5 ASPH telephoto zoom scheduled to appear for presentation at photokina 2014.
