Leaked AMD Ryzen 7 1700X numbers hint at performance faster than the Intel Core i7-5960X
Entire columns of text have already been written about AMD Ryzen, and the chips haven’t even launched yet. The latest rumor out of the grapevine involves supposedly leaked performance numbers from the top-end Ryzen 7 1700X, which appear to show it outperforming the already beastly octa-core Intel Core i7-5960X (3.0GHz, 20MB L3 cache).
If previous whispering are anything to go by, the Ryzen 7 1700X is a US$389 CPU with 8 cores and 16 threads, and a turbo frequency of up to 3.8GHz. This chip, or whatever its retail equivalent turns out to be, will likely be the one that enthusiasts will go for.
This round of benchmark leaks, which includes scores for a Ryzen 5 1600X, comes from Chinese tech site Xfastest.com, but the original article appears to have been taken down at the time of writing.
The scores are for CPU benchmark Cinebench, and the most interesting takeaway is the Ryzen chips’ performance relative to far pricier Intel Broadwell-E CPUs. For instance, the eight-core Intel Core i7-6900K (3.20GHz, 20MB L3 cache) is only a hair faster than the Ryzen 7 CPU, despite a staggering price tag of around US$1,050 on Newegg. It is also roughly 10 per cent quicker than the Core i7-5960X (3.0GHz, 20MB L3 cache), despite being rumored to cost only US$389, a fraction of the price of both Intel processors.
Similarly, the Ryzen 5 1600X is a six-core, 12-thread chip that reportedly will cost only US$259. At that price, it apparently outperforms even the Intel Core i7-7700K (4.20GHz, 8MB L3 cache) overclocked to 5.0GHz. That said, it did fall behind the six-core Core i7-6850K (3.60GHz, 15MB L3 cache), although that probably has a lot to do with the latter being an over US$600 part.
These figures will only add to the excitement surrounding Ryzen, but they should, as with all leaks, be taken with a huge pinch of salt. There’s no saying if the actual performance numbers and prices will resemble anything like we see here, but AMD looks to be headed for a win if they come anywhere close.
