Laser-projected movies are here – at Golden Village Paya Lebar

Note: This article was first published on 5th October 2017.

With their latest multiplex in Singpost Centre, Golden Village Multiplex (GV) is breaking from convention and shifting from lamp-based projectors to Smart laser cinema projectors from Barco. All eight auditoriums in the new 756-seat GV Paya Lebar have been fitted with Barco’s laser projection systems, allowing them to give better picture quality with higher contrast, color saturation, and crisper images.

We were given a short demonstration as GV staff arranged for the same film to be played side-by-side on both a laser projection system and a lamp projection system. The results were fairly obvious, as you can see from the images below. (In case it's not obvious, the left half was from the laser projection system, while the right half was from the typical lamp projection system.)

Unlike regular lamp-based projection systems, laser projectors don’t need bulbs to project light, so the quality of output will remain constant throughout the screen, and throughout the lifespan of the projector. Laser projectors also have a longer lifespan of more than 30,000 hours compared to the 500 hours of regular lamp-based systems, and they’re up to 45% more power efficient too, so the savings over time is fairly significant.

The projection systems come in 2K and 4K variants to match the different movie types.

What’s good to note is that GV doesn’t intend to charge higher prices for movies at GV Paya Lebar, so you won’t have to pay a premium to experience the improved quality. What you can pay a premium for, is seats in GV’s new Duo Deluxe hall. These have twin leatherette seats (pictured at the top of the article) with extra lumbar cushions and added space for enhanced privacy and comfort. We’re told tickets for this hall will cost $15 on weekdays and $20 for weekends, placing them just a level below GV’s Gold Class.

On a side note, GV Paya Lebar also boasts a 35-seater grab & Gold café which offers much more than the usual popcorn or hotdogs. The new exclusive menu offers desserts like Blue Velvet Lychee cake, Coffee Gao Siew Dai cake, and savory offerings like Thai Chicken Basil rice and Basil Cheese Pizza.

GV says talks are still underway regarding making the switch to laser projection at all of their cinemas island-wide, but we understand that this will happen eventually. For now though, if you want to see a movie in the best possible quality, we’d head to GV Paya Lebar. It officially opens this Friday, 6th October.
