Larry Page Explains Why It Would Be ‘Stupid’ to Run Google like Apple
Google co-founders Larry Page and Sergey Brin recently sat down for a fireside chat with venture capitalist Vinod Khosla. One of the topics on discussion was Apple and how it runs its business, with Page saying,
“I’ve been thinking about this change quite a bit over the years. I think it sounds stupid if you have this big company, and you can only do five things. I think it’s also not very good for the employees. Because then, you have 30,000 employees and they’re all doing the same thing, which isn’t very exciting for them."
Page further elaborated that he had previously discussed this issue with Steve Jobs,
I would always have this debate actually, with Steve Jobs. He’d be like, ‘You guys are doing too much stuff.’ And I’d be like, ‘Yeah that’s true.’ And he was right, in some sense. But I think the answer to that — which I only came to recently, as we were talking about this stuff — is that if you’re doing things that are highly interrelated, then there is some complexity limits.
In the interview, Page also revealed that he’s in charge of Google's day-to-day business, while Sergei Brin exclusively manages Google X, Google's semi-secret division in charge of technological innovations like Project Loon, Google Glass and the Google Driverless Car.
