KGI claims Apple will keep Lightning port on the iPhone 8
Days after the Wall Street Journal claimed that USB-C is coming to the iPhone 8, KGI Securities analyst Ming-Chi Kuo claims otherwise.
Kuo expects all three iPhone models this year to retain the Lightning port. While he acknowledges that USB Type-C offers faster data transfer, he believes that alone is insufficient to motivate Apple to change the port.
In addition, Kuo said that the continued use of the Lightning port will allow Apple to earn MiFi royalties from the accessory ecosystem and that space constraint remain a key consideration for the iPhone maker. As the USB Type-C port is bigger than the Lightning port, Apple can't afford to waste any space in the new chassis of the iPhone 8.
Fast charging capabilities are also said to be added to the iPhone 8. Apple will reportedly source new components from Texas Instruments and Cypress to allow a quicker charging process. It is not known at the moment whether these new components will aid in providing wireless charging for the iPhone 8.
