It's time to change your password again
Just a few days after the alleged Lizard Squad attack on Xbox Live and the the Playstation Network (which is thankfully mostly resolved), another news of hacking activity's been making the rounds and this one's a bit more serious. Hacking group Anonymous have alleged hacked into various sites and stolen user data, which includes passwords and credit card info.
An account claiming to be one belonging to the group released a list of websites affected, as well as the information collected in a list (which has since been taken down). Sites of note on the list include Amazon, Twitch, Xbox Live, Ubisoft and the Playstation Network.
Interestingly, there's another post on the AnomymousGlobo twitter feed that refutes it. The post denies Anonymous' alleged involvement in the hacks but does not elaborate more.
Many have suggested that the hacks may in fact have been committed by Lizard Squad, the very same group of hackers that attacked the major gaming networks over the Christmas holiday. Anonymous and Lizard Squad are at odds, with Anonymous even declaring 'war' on the latter group for accusing the group of working with the FBI. Many suggest that the hacks were made simply to besmirch the Anonymous name and that Anonymous wasn't behind the hacks at all, that is it was all a frame by Lizard Squad. Whatever the case may be, the fact of the matter is that the data is still stolen and is now freely visible to the public at large.
The hack impacted around 13,000 users, though the list on the alleged Anonymous feed has been taken down. To be safe, if you're a regular visitor to those sites, change your password and monitor your credit card usage for the next few days (or change your cards outright if you feel the need).
