It’s official: The N in Android N stands for Nougat

Google has announced on Snapchat that Android N will henceforth be known as Android Nougat, putting to bed considerable speculation as to what the ‘N’ would be standing for. If you were rooting for Nutella, sorry.

The confirmation comes after Google opened a page for users at last month’s I/O to submit suggested names for Android N, but it’s unclear how many people actually voted for Nougat. For starters, a quick trawl of Twitter throws up many tweets lamenting the fact that Nutella wasn’t chosen.

Nougat is slated for a summer release, and is currently on its second beta. New features include things like split-screen multi-tasking, an enhanced notification shade, and optimizations for existing Marshmallow features like Doze.

It will also support Daydream, Google’s new VR platform, although the phones themselves will need to have compatible hardware as well.
