iPhone X has the best phone display and camera for still images

While the iPhone 7 has the "best LCD display ever", the iPhone X is rated by DisplayMate to be the "most innovative and high performance smartphone display" that it has ever tested. In addition, DxOMark also rated the rear cameras of the iPhone X to the best in the industry when it comes to still images.

Based on its extensive lab tests and measurements, DisplayMate finds the display of the iPhone X to be very impressive with "close to text book perfect calibration and performance". The display is credited with:

  • the highest absolute color accuracy for any display
  • highest full screen brightness for OLED smartphones
  • highest full screen contrast rating in ambient light
  • highest contrast ratio
  • lowest screen reflectance
  • smallest brightness variation with viewing angle

The A+ grade, which is DisplayMate's highest ever grade, is attributed to Samsung Display for developing and manufacturing the display hardware for the iPhone X, and the impressive precision display calibration by Apple.

Moving on to mobile photography, the iPhone X surpassed the Huawei Mate 10 Pro and Samsung Galaxy Note8 in still photography. Compared to the iPhone 8 and 8 Plus, the iPhone X is assessed to be better in zoom performance, exposure, color, texture, noise and artifacts.

The iPhone X also delivered very good exposure, HDR images, accurate color rendering, good detail with low noise and natural-looking bokeh effect in Portrait mode. However, the iPhone X struggled in low light videos as there was noticeable underexposure, visible luminance noise and slight irregularities in autofocus and tracking which affected sharpness. Overall, the iPhone X is ranked side by side with the Huawei Mate 10 Pro and behind the leader, Google Pixel 2.
