iPhone 8 pre-orders said to be weaker than previous models
Following the report by KGI Securities analyst Ming-Chi Kuo on the iPhone X's cannibalizing the iPhone 8 pre-orders, another analyst also shared a similar sentiment.
According to Rosenblatt analyst Jun Zhang, his research suggests that the pre-orders for the iPhone 8 and 8 Plus are significantly lower than the iPhone 7 and iPhone 6 in the U.S and China. Zhang shared that there were about 1.5 million pre-orders for the iPhone 8 on JD.com in China in the first three days. In comparison, the iPhone 7 had 3.5 million pre-orders over the same period last year.
He also claimed that China Mobile received over 1 million pre-orders for the iPhone 8. To put that into perspective, the pre-orders for the iPhone 7 and iPhone 6 hit 2.5 million and 3.5 million units respectively over the same time period.
As Apple might not be able to meet consumer demand for the iPhone X until the first half of 2018, it might find itself in a risky position. Lower than expected demand for the iPhone 8 and insufficient supply of the highly anticipated iPhone X could affect its earnings significantly since iPhone sales make up more than half of the company's revenue.
