Market intelligence firm TrendForce has some new information on the new iPhones from its sources in the supply chain.

Similar to previous reports, TrendForce believes that there will be three new iPhone models with only one top-end model having a 5.8-inch 2K AMOLED display. Apple is said to have dropped plans for a curved display due to poor production yield and unsatisfactory drop test results with the 3D glass. The other two iPhone models will continue to use LCD panels with sizes of 4.7 and 5.5-inches.

TrendForce reiterated that the physical home button will be removed on the top-end model and related functions are embedded within the display. As for the memory and storage options, TrendForce heard that it will have 3GB RAM and comes in two storage options (64GB and 256GB). Memory and storage options for the 4.7-inch and 5.5-inch iPhones will remain similar as the current iPhone 7 lineup.

The top-end iPhone model is also expected to use 3D sensing technology for facial recognition and augmented reality applications, a claim which is corroborated by KGI Securities analyst Ming-Chi Kuo. Due to the significant innovations and new features packed in the top-end iPhone, TrendForce states that it is likely to cost at least US$1,000. Fast Company also shared a similar prediction.

Despite the high price tag, the top-end iPhone is estimated to account for at least 40% of the sales this year. On the other hand, the 4.7-inch iPhone model will have a more affordable price tag so as to compete against the Chinese phone makers in regional markets.
