iPhone 7 could be water and dustproof thanks to flush digital home button

Apple may not bring "any must-have form factor changes" to the iPhone 7 this year, but it is rumored again to bring water and dust resistance to the iPhone.

Chinese site Storm claims that Apple will replace the current hardware home button with a digital touch-sensitive button. This will help Apple design a chassis that is waterproof and dustproof. The chassis may also come in a matte black tone. In addition, Apple is said to use haptic feedback motors to provide tactile feedback when users touch the digital button.

Reports of waterproofing and a digital home button are not new; earlier in December 2015, research firm TrendForce said that the iPhone 7 will have a waterproof feature. Japanese site Macotakara disagreed based on information from its sourcesApple filed a patent in 2014 for a self-healing iPhone where the speakers can play special tones to get rid of the water from the inside.

Sources in Taiwan's IC design industry told DigiTimes that Apple was working on touch and display driver integration (TDDI) single-chip solutions for the iPhone which can integrate fingerprint sensors with the virtual home button. One of the five different configurations for the iPhone 7 reportedly being tested by Apple had fingerprint recognition technology embedded in the display.
