It's been a year since the Apple iPad was launched, and Facebook users have found themselves shortchanged without a Facebook app that's optimized for the tablet's generous screen size and resolution. While you can still download the Facebook for iPhone app onto the iPad, magnifying it to fit the larger 9.7-inch screen is quite an eye-sore. Otherwise, others have resorted to using third party apps such as Friendly or simply conduct their Facebook activities through the Safari web browser. But all this might change in a couple of weeks, should Facebook come through and release its official app, optimized for the iPad.
New York Times - Facebook had its application for the iPhone ready right when the Apple App Store opened in July 2008. But more than a year after the iPad went on sale, there is still no official Facebook app for it. That is about to change. People briefed on Facebook’s plans say that in coming weeks the company plans to introduce a free iPad application that has been carefully designed and optimized for the tablet.
Given how the upcoming iOS 5 will support Twitter integration instead of Facebook, one has to wonder if this delay in releasing the app is a deliberate move on both Apple and Facebook, or just a matter of coincidence. Nonetheless, it's good to have an official app to access the main features of Facebook. Personally, if you use Facebook as a news reader like some of us do, perhaps Flipboard's magazine-style layout is more suitable.
