Intel Reiterates its Mobile Processor Offerings at Annual Developers Forum

At Intel's annual developer forum this week, the company highlighted new processors from its Atom series that have made inroads into data center servers and mobile devices. One of the keynote addresses touched on the new standard features of Haswell-based Ultrabooks, complete with gaming demonstrations.

During a keynote address by Kirk Skaugen, Intel senior vice president and general manager of the PC Client Group, who demonstrated the fourth generation Intel Core processor-based (Haswell) Ultrabook reference design called “Harris Beach.” He demonstrated the Dirt3 game in order to show the graphical improvements made by the Haswell processor. He also showcased a Haswell-based concept premium notebook called Niagara that was able to play the unreleased title Grid 2 without the need for a discrete graphics chip. Standards features amongst all fourth generation Intel Core processor-based Ultrabook devices will include Intel WiDi, touch-enabled screens as well as voice recognition capabilities.

On the mobile front, Intel revealed their progress made with 'Valleyview' Atom chips with PC features on the Bay Trail platform as well as the Clover Trail+ Atom SoCs (systems on chip) that will power smartphones. Mr. Tan Weng Kuan, vice president and general manager of the Mobile Communications Group, Intel China, spoke about the new Atom Z2580 processor ("Clover Trail+") for smartphones and the Intel Atom Processor Z2760 (“Clover Trail”) for tablets.

He also talked about the upcoming 22nm Intel quad-core Atom 'Bay Trail' SoC that is touted as the most powerful Intel Atom processor. By the end of the year, the Intel 'Merrifield' Atom SoC (system on chip) is slated to be launched and will be featured in smartphones with "...increased smartphone performance, power efficiency and battery life over the current-generation offering."
