Intel to Consider CEO From Outside the Company
Intel is actively searching for their new CEO and according to sources familiar with the matter, the board is seriously considering outside candidates for its top job. They hope to find a replacement by May, which is when present CEO, Paul Otellini, is scheduled to retire.
The pressing issues facing Intel today is that PC sales are declining. In fact, last year, Intel posted its first sales decline in 12 years. Mobile is on the rise, but Intel has virtually no share of the mobile market. As such, two possible outsiders are considered for the role - former Motorola CEO Sanjay Jha and VMware CEO and former Intel executive Paul Gelsinger.
Jha has tremendous experience in the mobile business, having spent 14 years at Qualcomm before joining Motorola in 2004. He left Motorola after it was acquired by Google. On the other hand, Gelsinger has expertise in cloud services and software. There's increasing focus and demand for cloud services and Intel could capitalize on this as it has a strong position in the market for processors used in servers.
Interestingly, if either are selected, it would be the first time an outsider got Intel's top job.
