Intel Announces Patch to Disable K-Series CPU Overclocking on Non-Z87 Boards
Intel will release a microcode patch that will block the CPU overclocking capabilities of non-Z87 motherboards. This is in response to motherboard manufacturers, who have offered unofficial overclocking support for unlocked 4th generation Intel Core processors on their H87, B85 and H81 boards.
According to The Tech Report, who picked up this report from the folks at Hardware.Fr, Intel will release the patch this week. To date, manufacturers like ASRock and Biostar have announced support for overclocking of 4th generation Intel Core K-series processors, on their entire range of Intel 8-series motherboards. For consumers who have purchased such non-Intel Z87 chipset boards for this purpose, the only way to continue enjoying this feature is to avoid any future BIOS updates for their boards.
Intel has restricted CPU overclocking to the K-series of their 4th generation of Intel Core processors, and such processors need to be paired with an Intel Z87 chipset-based motherboard. Due to an apparent bug in the non-Z87 chipsets of H87, B85 and H81, board manufacturers have been quick to capitalize on this loophole to offer unofficial CPU overclocking features for these boards.
