Intel Aims to Power Wearable Devices with Quark SoCs

Intel has announced a new line of system on chips (SoC) called Quark. These SoCs are designed to power wearable devices as they are touted to be the next wave of portable computing equipment.

According to Intel, the chips are designed for power efficiency and their small footprints, rather than for performance. The company is in the process of preparing sample reference boards that support the Quark platform. They are slated to be shipped in the fourth quarter of this year, to assist partners design Quark-based solutions for use in the industrial, energy and transportation segments. During his keynote address at IDF 2013, Intel CEO Brian Krzanich said that the Quark processor is about one-fifth the size of their current Intel Silvermont Atom processor, and requires only one-tenth its power. Quark is also "fully synthesizable with an open architecture, with an open ecosystem."

Besides the industrial usage of Quark systems, he also mentioned that Intel will not dictate the form factors of other devices, especially end-user wearables. The primary aim of the company is to design products and support their partners readily with reference design models.
