Intel acquires wearable technology company Recon Instruments for US$175 million

Virtual reality and augmented reality look set to be the next two big things in technology. Microsoft recently showed off its HoloLens and a slew of many other companies have their own AR and VR projects in the works.

To this end, Intel has just announced that it has acquired Vancouver-based wearable display company Recon Instruments for US$175 million. Recon Instruments is best known for its wearable sports displays, and only recently announced a new display called Jet that's targeted at runners and cyclists.

Having Recon Instruments onboard will give Intel a leg-up in terms of having products that are ready to take advantage of VR and AR technology, and will also play well into Intel's overall strategy of betting big on wearable devices. Intel unveiled a smart bracelet last year targeted at women.

Although the team at Recon Instruments will now work more closely with those at Intel, Recon Instruments will continue selling its own products and will also continue to work on them and improving them.
