Swedish furniture retailer, Ikea, teased the masses about a month ago with limited information on their upcoming Uppleva built-in home entertainment system, rumored to feature an LED-backlit HDTV and Blu-ray player integrated with a storage cabinet. What we knew then was that the proposed Full-HD panel from Ikea would carry a refresh rate of 400Hz along with support for DivX HD clips. More recently, GigaOM broke the news that Ikea will be packaging their Uppleva range with a handful of big names from the land of video streams, including YouTube, Vimeo, TuneIn Radio, and DailyMotion amongst others. Slated to go on sale in Europe next month, Ikea's TV-and-rack combo is expected to flaunt about 20 apps for each country.

According to an Ikea spokesperson, general apps on the Uppleva can be segregated into various categories, including music playback, games, video-on-demand, and catch-up video playback. The Swedish display is also said to carry an open-source browser, likely to be Opera for TV which supports the budding HTML5 web standard. These factors, effectively, qualifies it as a Smart TV on most fronts. To recap, the Uppleva TV will arrive in four sizes, ranging from 24 to 46 inches, with a starting price of US$960. In hindsight, this is an ingenious move from the furniture maker since it is enticing consumers to purchase the home entertainment package from one stop - and that's Ikea. We wonder how their T&C would pan out though, since the failure of any one equipment would probably require an overhaul of the entire system, not unless the TV set or Blu-ray deck are replaceable or serviceable that is.
