HTC is taking a page out of Samsung's playbook with the release of its latest Android smartphone, the J Butterfly.

Announced by Japanese telco KDDI, the latest J Butterfly is actually a waterproof One (M8) in disguise. Similar to the One (M8), the J Butterfly has dual cameras on its rear. While the secondary depth sensor remains the same, the J Butterfly has a 13-megapixel primary camera module instead of the 4-megapixel UltraPixel sensor. It also has a slightly bigger 2,700mAh battery and comes with 32GB internal storage space.

The rest of the specs mirrors that of the One (M8, which include a Qualcomm Snapdragon 801 processor, 2GB RAM and Android 4.4 KitKat. KDDI expects to sell the device in stores towards the end of August or later.

The Butterfly range of smartphones was launched two years ago in Japan. It was later rebranded as HTC DNA (also known as DLX) in the U.S. HTC eventually announced a global variant, the Butterfly towards the end of 2012. The Butterfly was succeeded by a second generation model, the Butterfly S. We will not be surprised if this new model will eventually be available outside of Japan.

With the launch of the latest J Butterfly, HTC seems to be churning out the One (M8) in different flavors to hit different market segments. At press time, HTC has unveiled the flagship One (M8) in March, the One Mini 2 in May - which is the smaller variant of the One (M8) - and its plastic variant, the One (E8) in June.
