HTC: "Unrealistic" for Android vendors to guarantee monthly security updates

With LG, Samsung and Google promising monthly security updates for their devices, two consumers decided to pop the question to HTC on whether the company is following suit. Well, let's just say the conversation did not turn out well.

According to Jason Mackenzie, the President for HTC America, the company "will push for them" (referring to the monthly security updates), but it is "unrealistic for anyone to say guaranteed every month". He went on to say that carrier approval has to be sought whenever an update needs to be pushed, and this does not apply for unlocked and non-carrier SKUs.

Google rolled out the monthly security update initiative after the Stagefright bug and a video-related security issue surfaced in July. With the new Stagefright 2.0 affecting more than 1.4 billion Android devices, it's only right for consumers to demand security fixes for their mobile devices although it remains to be seen whether Android vendors can act quick enough to fix these vulnerabilities.
