HTC schedules press event on August 19, possible launch of One (M8) for Windows

HTC is not only busy churning out Android smartphones this year; it is expected to launch its first Windows Phone device in two years later this month.

According to GSMArena, HTC has sent out press invites for a launch event in New York City on August 19. It is believed that the company will unveil a Windows Phone device based on the One (M8).

The official name of the device has yet to be finalized. Engadget claimed two days ago that the device will be tentatively called the One (M8) for Windows while @evleaks revealed in a tweet that the device will be called HTC W8.

The specs of the Windows Phone device are likely to be similar to the current One (M8), which include a 5-inch 1080p display, a Qualcomm Snapdragon 801 chipset, BoomSound speakers and Duo Camera. It is also said to have another trick up its sleeve - Voice over LTE (VoLTE).

If the device comes with VoLTE capability and eventually arrives in Singapore, consumers are able to try out the higher quality calls on the three local telcos. SingTel had rolled out the world's first commercial full-feature VoLTE service on May 31 while the other two telcos - M1 and StarHub - are jumping on the bandwagon soon.

Both Engadget and @evleaks stated that the device will retail at U.S telco Verizon during Q3 2014 or no later than the end of September. Therefore, Windows Phone 8.1 fans should not have to wait very long to buy one.
