It appears that HTC is on its way to be the first smartphone and tablet manufacturer outside Sony to get PlayStation certification for their devices, sources have confirmed to Pocket-lint. The surprising announcement is expected to be confirmed at the forthcoming Mobile World Congress.
This will mean that HTC PS-certified devices will eventually run most PSOne titles and Sony PlayStation-certified games, the same way Sony’s very own Xperia Play did.
Pocket-lint - The Sony's Playstation Suite and certification program is aimed at appealing to manufacturers and gamers; the former is offered access to Sony's suite of Playstation games whereas the latter gets to play their favorite PS games.
Such a move will be a big boost for HTC, giving it a gaming focus as well as a music one (thanks to its partnership with Beats Audio). It'll help in its fight with Samsung and Apple, who have managed to streak ahead in sales and popularity in the past year.
When we asked HTC about PlayStation certification for its devices, the company said it couldn't "comment on rumors or speculation". However, our source suggests that certification will be awarded in the second half of 2012.
