HTC Explorer Announced

HTC is up to something on the 6th of October, but before the event goes live, news of its entry-level Android smartphone, the HTC Explorer, has been announced in India.

The Explorer is positioned along the same range as its earlier HTC Wildfire S, that being an affordable Google Android 2.3 (Gingerbread) smartphone for the masses. Specs-wise, the Explorer takes a very basic approach, providing the essentials for the smartphone experience. This includes a 3.2-inch HVGA (480 x 320) capacitive display, 600MHz processor, 3-megapixel camera and 512MB of expandable memory.

HTC's trademark user interface, HTC Sense, will be available on the Explorer, and updated to version 3.5 which was seen on an earlier video leak. To add a level of differentiation, the Explorer will give customers the option to customize their Explorer with a range of optional colors for its back covers including Metallic Blue, Metallic Orange, Metallic White and Metallic Purple, on top of the standard Metallic Black, Active Black and Metallic Navy colors.

Besides India, the HTC Explorer will be available in Asia from Q4 2011. When we reached out to HTC Singapore, we were told that its pricing and availability within Singapore has not been confirmed. More details should be available from the HTC regional event that's happening on the 6th of October, which should also see the HTC Sensation XE, HTC Bass (otherwise known as Runnymede) and HTC Radar making an appearance at the event.
