HP’s latest LaserJets are all about performance and security

The HP LaserJet Pro MFP M426 is surprisingly compact for a laser MFP.

In addition to new entry inkjet printers, HP Inc. has also announced the new LaserJet 400 series laser printers designed for businesses, with support for mobile printing solutions including wireless direct and NFC touch-to-print. These printers are ideal for small work teams with 3 to 10 users printing up to 4,000 pages a month, and they come with the new HP Original Toner cartridges with JetIntelligence to reduce wastage and increase performance, protection, and print capacity. For example, the anti-fraud technology built into every JetIntelligence toner cartridge allows users to identify counterfeit cartridges. It’s also able to predict toner levels, thus helping IT managers plan and get the most out of each toner cartridge.

The new LaserJet 400 series consists of the following:

HP Color LaserJet Pro M452 series: Available now with a starting price of S$869, the LaserJet Pro M452 series offers color printing performance with up to 48% faster first page out than its predecessor. Other features include a 3-inch touchscreen and direct printing from a USB drive (not all models), easy printing from a variety of smartphones and tablets, and wireless direct printing (select models). A4 print speed is rated at 27ppm for both black and color printing.

HP LaserJet Pro MFP M426 series: This series offers monochrome printing, as well as other functions such as dual-sided scanning and support for document workflows, including scan to email, folder, USB, and cloud capabilities. Compared to its predecessor, its 2-sided printing speed is up to 100% faster. The 38ppm-rated M426 series is now available with a starting price of S$799.

HP Color LaserJet Pro MFP M477 series: Available now with a start price of S$899, this color series offers fast, dual-sided scanning and support for document workflows, including scan to email, folder, USB, and cloud capabilities. Versus its predecessor, color printing performance is up to 150% faster for 2-sided printing and first page out time is up to 46% faster. A4 print speed is rated at 27ppm for both black and color printing.

Super-secure enterprise-level LaserJet printers too

Last but not least, HP has also announced three new enterprise-class models that deliver even higher levels of protection against malicious attacks. With BIOS, firmware, and memory-level protection, HP says they're the most secure printers in the market. To be more specific, these security features include:

  • HP SureStart that enables detection of and self-healing recovery from malicious BIOS attacks
  • Whitelisting to ensure that only known, good firmware can be loaded and executed on a printer
  • Run-time Intrusion Detection for in-device memory monitoring for malicious attacks. This feature is developed in partnership with Red Balloon, an embedded device security company founded by researchers from Columbia University

These new features will be standard on new HP LaserJet Enterprise printers and OfficeJet Enterprise X printers with PageWide Technology going forward. With a firmware update, these three features can also be enabled on several HP LaserJet Enterprise printers delivered since April. In addition, two of the features, whitelisting and Run-time Intrusion Detection, can be added to many existing HP LaserJet and Pagewide Enterprise printers launched since 2011 through an HP FutureSmart service pack update.

Beyond the printer itself, HP also helps customers protect their print environment with solutions to manage security. There’s HP JetAdvantage Security Manager, the industry’s only policy-based printer security compliance solution, that lets IT establish and maintain security settings such as closing ports, disabling access protocols, auto-erase files, and more. For example, when a reboot occurs, the HP Instant-On Security is able to check and reset any impacted settings automatically to bring devices into compliance with the organization’s policy.

Three new enterprise machines to get these new features, including the aforementioned HP Original Toner cartridges with JetIntelligence, are the LaserJet Enterprise M506 series, LaserJet Enterprise MFP M527 series, and Color LaserJet Enterprise MFP M577 series. Built for ease of use with support for printing from mobile devices, they’re designed for workgroups of 5 to 15 users printing up to 7,500 pages per month.

The HP LaserJet Enterprise M506 series is now available at a starting price of S$2,076; the LaserJet Enterprise MFP M527 series from S$3,399; and the Color LaserJet Enterprise MFP M577 series from S$3,999. More details of these printers can be found here.

The JetIntelligence toner cartridges are easy to install; and because the instant-on fuser (made with a thin and light material) reduces warm-up time, first page out time from a sleep state is greatly improved.
