Here's the design philosophy behind the Samsung Galaxy View

Samsung created the phablet category four years ago and it seems to be carving yet another category this time with the Galaxy View. It's neither a tablet nor a laptop. So what's it? Well, Samsung's product planners and UX designers share their thoughts on why they create the Galaxy View.

To set the record straight, Samsung's product team states that the Galaxy View is not a tablet even though it looks like a large tablet or all-in-one PC. They prefer to call it "a movable display device" which is designed for watching videos and other media. Simply put, the Galaxy View is a device that lies in between TVs and tablets.

“As mobile device technologies develop, the line between watching video content comfortably at home or conveniently on the move has faded away. With screen resolutions that match or beat high quality televisions, as well as apps that can play a huge selection of video content, users can easily enjoy watching video through mobile devices, but TVs still have comparative advantages. We wanted to create a device with a large, captivating screen, and with all the versatility and connectivity of a mobile device. If TVs are fixed, and tablet PCs are portable, then the Galaxy View lies in between: a movable,” said Hogon Kim, Manager of Product Strategy Team, Mobile & IT Communications Business.

The Galaxy View is created for consumers who don't want to sit in a fixed location to watch videos yet dislike the smaller screens of smartphones. That's where the two-way stand and handle come into play; users can hold the Galaxy View and move it with ease. The two-way handle also allows the user to view the display at two comfortable angles.

The UX team aims to deliver the best user experience on the Galaxy View, hence they removed numerous design features that require the user to micro-operate them with micro-touch. This led to the creation of bigger icons that are more readable and intuitive.

“Smartphones or tablets are meant to be used in the hand, but the Galaxy View is designed to be used from arm’s reach. This length is critical to the Galaxy View experience. We focused on this distance when we created the new user experience design. We eliminated many design features that require customers to micro-operate them with fine touch. We made sure the Galaxy View uses big icons that are more intuitive and readable,” explained Hyun Kim, Senior Designer at Mobile & IT Communications Business.
