Here’s more reason to root for a fourth telco: Free 1-year unlimited mobile data for MyRepublic subscribers

MyRepublic certainly wants to shake up the telecommunications market. Earlier this year, it announced its bid to become Singapore’s fourth telco and bring back unlimited mobile data plans in Singapore, news that – if successful – could appeal strongly to customers who have struggled to get used to the roll back of 12GB plans. Now, it has announced plans to offer all existing customers a 1-year free subscription to an unlimited mobile data plan should it succeed in becoming Singapore’s fourth telco, an aggressive move that fleshes out its ambitions in the industry.

To be eligible, existing customers must have an active broadband subscription with MyRepublic by 30 September 2015, and remain a MyRepublic subscriber until they officially launch as a telco. That leaves you till just the end of this month for a shot at free, unlimited mobile data for a year. So if you’re due to renew your fiber broadband contract, MyRepublic just got a lot more attractive.

In preparation for its fourth telco bid, MyRepublic is due to begin a Mobility Trial in the Jurong Lake District starting on 22 October this year. Trial participants will receive a free smartphone that has been verified to work with MyRepublic’s mobile network. MyRepublic hasn’t confirmed the phone model yet, but it has said that it will be worth at least S$270 and is currently evaluating the Xiaomi Mi 4i smartphone. Participants will be able to keep the phone after the trial ends.

To qualify for the free phone, participants will need to use MyRepublic’s mobile network over the eight-week trial period to complete tasks like taking and uploading a picture to Facebook, and participating in a guided tour of the area after collecting the phone.

Interested parties can indicate interest in the mobility trial here.

The Mobility Trial will use the small cell technology that is central to MyRepublic's plans to become a next-generation telco. Because these small cells can be deployed inside vehicles, lifts, and narrow corridors, they could significantly improve coverage in certain areas over a single, large base station. If all goes according to plan, MyRepublic could launch as Singapore's fourth telco between late 2017 and mid-2018.
