Here’s how Office for Mac will work with the new MacBook Pros with a Touch Bar
In case you missed it, Apple last week announced all-new 13 and 15-inch MacBook Pro models. They’re thinner, lighter, have better screens, and the 15-inch model and one of the 13-inch ones get a new Touch Bar with integrated Touch ID sensor.
Microsoft Office for Mac is one of the first out of the gate to announce support for the funky Touch Bar. In a nutshell, depending on the document you’re working on, Office will intelligently put the most common commands on the Touch Bar.
Word
In Word, a Word Focus mode hides on-screen ribbons and commands, so what’s left on the screen is your document. Need to apply a new style to a heading or paragraph? Just use the commands that are now on the Touch Bar.
PowerPoint
In PowerPoint, Touch Bar is all about letting you manipulate your graphic elements. A Reorder Objects button produces a graphical map of all the layers on a slide, making it easy to find the right object and move it where you want it. You can also slide your finger across the Touch Bar to rotate an object.
Excel
Typing an ‘=’ sign into a cell in Excel will pull up the most recently used functions in the Touch Bar. For example, with a tap (for the formula) and another tap (for a named range) in the Touch Bar, you can quickly sum a range in your spreadsheet. You can also get to borders, cell colors, and recommended charts quickly via the Touch Bar.
Outlook
When you’re composing an email, the Touch Bar will show a list of recent documents; tap on one and you’ll add it (either as an attachment or a link) to your email. And from the Today view on the Touch Bar you can see your calendar events for the day, as well as join a Skype for Business meeting.
