The television is poised to become a central part of the future of home entertainment, according to Netflix.

Enter the world of smart, connected TVs, which have become the primary viewing device of up to 60 per cent of Netflix accounts within six months of subscription. In the Asia Pacific region, 61 per cent of Netflix viewing hours were on connected TVs, with smart TVs leading the charge, followed by media streaming devices such as Apple TVs and game consoles.

This is even more significant because of the multi-device ecosystem we’re living in today. Now, you’re able to watch Netflix on myriad devices, including your smartphone, tablet, laptop, and of course, the TV.

You use different devices in different contexts, but despite this flexibility, Netflix says the TV remains the centerpiece of the consumer entertainment experience. Viewing sessions on TV also tend to be twice as long as on mobile, so it stands to reason that these users would want a better and more immersive audio-visual experience.

Sales of smart TVs have also increased 40 per cent compared to last year, while Ultra HD 4K TVs surged by 103 per cent over the past year, so all the signs point toward a growing enthusiasm for consuming media on a connected TV.

In this context, Netflix’s focus on audio-video technologies like High Dynamic Range (HDR) and Dolby Atmos makes a lot of sense.

HDR greatly improves the viewing experience by enabling brighter highlights and preserving detail in darker scenes. On the other hand, Dolby Atmos focuses on providing more realistic sound by ditching traditional audio channels in favor of object-based audio that can create a more immersive surround sound effect.

Here’s a list of some of the titles that are available in 4K and HDR today, some of which also support Dolby Atmos:

  • Okja (Dolby Atmos)
  • Blame! (Dolby Atmos)
  • Death Note (Dolby Atmos)
  • Wheelman (Dolby Atmos)
  • Marvel’s The Defenders
  • Marvel’s Daredevil
  • Marvel’s Jessica Jones
  • Mindhunter
  • Star Trek: Discovery
  • Abstract
  • Chef’s Table
  • Glow
  • Samurai Gourmet
  • Chasing Coral
  • The OA
  • Fire Chasers
  • War Machine
  • First They Killed My Father
  • Our Souls At Night
  • Friends From College
  • Santa Clarita Diet

That’s not all however, and Netflix says that more shows are coming that support these new technologies, including Marvel’s The Punisher, new seasons of Stranger Things and Black Mirror, and Bright, a fantasy-action blockbuster starring Will Smith.
