GoPro expands VR efforts with new GoPro Omni rig

GoPro Omni, with its cube frame that holds six GoPro HERO4 cameras together for VR goodness.

Action-packed Virtual Reality (VR) footage shot on powerful cameras becomes more accessible to the masses when GoPro announced their new GoPro Omni array yesterday.

The GoPro Omni is an elegant cube-shaped frame that holds and connects six GoPro HERO4 Black cameras together. Each GoPro HERO4 shoots at a maximum of 2.7K resolution (2,704 x 2,028 pixels resolution). The combination of all six action cameras allowed the rig to capture 360-degree videos at 8K resolution (7,940 x 3,970 pixels resolution) at 30 frames per second.

The key highlight of the GoPro Omni array is the proprietary hardware that gives it pixel-level synchronization, making all six equipped cameras work as one. The GoPro Omni lets you start and stop recording together. The special GoPro Kolor stitching software makes the footage easier to edit, but you can also use Adobe Premiere Pro CC and Adobe After Effects CC to do your post-production work. GoPro and Adobe are collaborating for the Omni array, and this allows its native 360-degree video to be edited at 8K resolution. Users can also use the 8K video footage to extract HD deliverables.

Buying the GoPro Omni gets you more than just the frame and the cameras. You will also get the software license for the above-mentioned GoPro Kolor, a GoPro Smart Remote, six GoPro Mini USB cables, microSD cards, and card readers. All this will come shipped in a compact and rugged case.

You can pre-order the GoPro Omni at US$5,000 on the GoPro website, along with the option of buying the US$1,500 cube frame if you already own six GoPro HERO4 Black cameras. While this new VR rig by GoPro feels costly, it is nowhere as expensive as the professional-grade GoPro Odyssey, which costs US$15,000 for its 16-camera array.

The GoPro Omni announcement also saw the introduction of the GoPro Kolor Eyes app – a video player for playing 360-degree VR content on your iOS or Android OS phone.
