Google's Modular Smartphone May be the Last Phone you Ever Need

Google has unveiled an ambitious modular smartphone concept at its Project Ara Developer Conference that would let customers swap out major components, including the camera, speakers and GPS module. The device would retail for just US$50 for the basic smartphone, and could be available as early as January 2015.

The device is currently known as 'the grey phone' due to its deliberately drab appearance. "It's meant to be drab grey to get people to customise it," said Paul Eremenko, team lead on Project Ara.

Eremenko further explained that the "core frame of the Grey phone will be built to last around five to six years, allowing users to upgrade their phones steadily, buying cheap individual components like a better camera, improved Bluetooth or new 4G radio from an app store-like shop."

Project Ara is the result of Google’s purchase of Motorola and its Advanced Technology and Projects group, which was retained while other parts of Motorola’s business were sold off to Lenovo. We first saw a glimpse of Project Ara back in 2013.
