Google's long-awaited Nexus 2015 smartphones are now officially out

Finally, the Nexus rumors have been laid to rest. Google’s latest announcement on their own blog had plenty of new products lined up and ready for the market. In it includes the official announcement of the heavily rumored Nexus smartphones done in collaboration with Huawei and LG.

Specifications of the LG Nexus 5X.

LG’s version is officially known as the Nexus 5X, according to Google’s blog entry. It appears that the smartphone was built with the popularity of the LG Nexus 5 in mind, but with updated specifications. The Nexus 5X is a 5.2-inch smartphone with a screen resolution of 1920 x 1080 pixels (Full HD) at 423 ppi on LCD. It uses a 64-bit 1.8GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon 808 hexa-core processor (same as the flagship LG G4 smartphone), paired with an Adreno 418 GPU for graphics, all powered by 2GB RAM. By comparison, the predecessor from 2013 has a smaller 4.95-inch display and it uses an older Snapdragon 800 quad-core processor, but it also uses 2GB for RAM.

Of course, we’re not forgetting the 5.7-inch Huawei Nexus 6P. It appears that the very recent leaks are quite accurate. In case you missed it, it will come with a 2560 x 1440 pixel (Quad HD) AMOLED display at 518 ppi. It uses a 64-bit 2.0GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon 810 v2.1 octa-core processor, paired with Adreno 430 GPU (same processor as the flagship HTC One M9). The 3GB RAM on the Huawei model feels generous, but what makes it important to Google is that the Nexus 6P is the first all-metal-body for the Nexus smartphone models.

Some really neat features available to both Nexus smartphones would be the USB Type-C fast-charging port and the 12-megapixel camera sensor with 1.55-micron pixels, and the Nexus’ very own fingerprint sensor, the Nexus Imprint. To sweeten the package, both smartphones come with Android 6.0 OS (Marshmallow) out of the box.

Both phones are also eligible for Project Fi, a little experiment that Google is trying with a mobile data plan, which has interesting features such as paying only US$10 for every GB of data bought, getting refunds down to the very cent for unused MB data, and having international mobile data coverage across 120+ countries.

However, not everything is rainbows and unicorns on marshmallow clouds – both smartphones will come without MicroSD card slots, so you have 32GB, 64GB, and (thankfully) 128GB for the Huawei Nexus 6P, but a paltry 16GB or 32GB for the LG Nexus 5X. Also, while they are available for pre-order on the Google Store, you can already guess interested buyers in Singapore can’t access the site.

However, if you are planning on getting either smartphones via your own means, it’ll be handy to know that the Huawei Nexus 6P has a recommended retail price starting at US$499 (~S$711) , while the LG Nexus 5X will start at US$379 (~S$540). It will begin shipping to other countries, such as the U.S., the U.K., Ireland and Japan, in October 2015.

Update, 3:00 PM: Huawei has informed us that it will be selling the Nexus 6P in Singapore "soon".
