Google to release its own handset by the end of the year
While HTC is rumored to be building two Nexus phones this year, Google is reportedly releasing its own branded smartphone later this year.
Sources familiar with the matter told The Telegraph that Google is currently in talks with telcos to release a Google-branded phone by the end of this year. This will see Google taking more control over the design, manufacturing and software unlike the Nexus program where Android vendors manufacture the phones and Google provides the Android software.
The Information reported in February that Google CEO Sundar Pichai has hinted to staff and outsiders of his plan to build phones without the help of OEM partners. Google is motivated to do this so as to reduce reliance on Apple to generate revenue on high-end devices and improve the overall image of Android.
