Google Outage Allegedly Caused 40% Drop in Internet Traffic
Google services suffered a brief 5-minute outage early morning last Saturday at approximately 07:32am. According to GoSquared, a web traffic analytics company, this outage caused a 40% drop in global Internet traffic.
The services that suffered outage include Google search and a host of its cloud computing-based services. According to GoSquared's real-time tracking, this outage caused a 40% decline in global Internet traffic, in terms of global page view per minute. After Google's services were resumed, GoSquared observed a spike in page views as users managed to obtain what they had requested.
This incident just highlights the dependency of Internet users on the services of Google. According to Phil Dearson, head of strategy for Tribal Worldwide, who spoke to Fast Company, the simultaneous outage of all major Google services was unprecedented.
