Google may soon let you activate Assistant with a custom hotword

According to the folks over at 9to5Google, Google is preparing to let users use a custom hotword to summon Google Assistant.

At the moment, you can use either “Hey Google” or “OK Google” to activate Assistant, but both don’t exactly roll off the tongue. Comparatively, Amazon gives users more options to wake Alexa, such as “Alexa”, “Amazon”, “Echo”, and even “Computer”.

But this may change soon. When digging into the latest version of the Google app APK, 9to5Google found code that suggests that Android phone users may soon be able to use a phrase of their choice. Additionally, users are able to train Assistant to recognize the custom hotword. Finally, even when a custom hotword is added, the original “Hey Google” or “OK Google” will still work.

It’s unclear if the Mountain View company is bringing this feature beyond Android phones to other devices running Assistant (e.g., Google Home speakers), but hey, it’s a good start, right?
