Google may be building its own Nexus phones without the help of OEM partners

Huawei is one of the two OEM partners to make the Nexus phones of 2015.

Since the beginning of the Nexus program, Google has recruited the help of OEM partners to build its Nexus devices every year. However, The Information claims in an exclusive report that this may be a thing of the past as Google plans to take more control over the Nexus program.

According to The Information, Google CEO Sundar Pichai has hinted to staff and outsiders that the company is planning to take more control over the Nexus program. Since Google is already responsible for the software, this new focus suggests that Google may be adopting an Apple-like strategy to make its own hardware.

Besides improving the Android brand, this move will help Google cut reliance on Apple to generate revenues on high-end devices as it was recently reported that Google paid Apple US$1 billion in 2014 to keep its Search Bar on the iPhones

Building its own Nexus devices would also mean that Google will only have its name on the devices, but it doesn't mean that the company will build its own processors, displays or other hardware components.

There is currently no information on when Google plans to build its own Nexus devices, but HTC is rumored to be making two Nexus phones later this year. Will the move to make its own devices alienate the OEM partners the same way Microsoft did with its Surface tablets? Microsoft is also said to be building its own Surface Phone for release later this year.
